Bringing a new puppy home is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming.
Many owners ask the same question in the early weeks:
“What should I actually be training first?”
There’s no shortage of puppy training advice online, but in reality the most important skills are often simple foundations that make everyday life easier for both dog and owner.
Here are five of the most valuable things to start teaching your puppy.
1. Name Response
Your puppy’s name should mean “pay attention to me.”
Many owners accidentally use their puppy’s name when they’re already distracted or doing something else.
Instead, practise saying your puppy’s name and rewarding them the moment they look at you.
This builds a powerful habit:
Hear name → look at owner → good things happen
That small skill becomes incredibly useful later for recall and focus.
2. Recall
Recall is one of the most important behaviours a dog can learn.
With puppies, the key is to make coming back to you the best part of the walk.
You can build recall by:
- rewarding your puppy generously when they return
- running away from them to encourage chasing you
- practising lots of easy recalls indoors or in the garden
Avoid calling your puppy repeatedly when they’re unlikely to respond. Instead, set them up to succeed.
3. Calm Behaviour
Puppies are naturally energetic and curious, but learning how to settle is an important life skill.
You can help by:
- rewarding calm behaviour when it happens naturally
- providing appropriate rest during the day
- avoiding constant stimulation or excitement
Teaching calmness early helps puppies grow into relaxed adult dogs.
4. Loose Lead Walking
Many owners start worrying about lead pulling once their puppy becomes stronger.
But the foundations for good lead walking can start early.
Rather than expecting perfect walking, focus on rewarding:
- your puppy choosing to stay near you
- moments when the lead is slack
- your puppy checking in with you
Short, positive sessions help puppies understand that staying close to their handler makes the walk rewarding.
5. Handling and Cooperation
Puppies will need to be handled throughout their lives for things like:
- vet visits
- grooming
- nail clipping
- putting on harnesses or leads
Teaching your puppy that gentle handling leads to rewards helps them feel comfortable with these experiences.
This makes everyday care much easier as they grow older.
Good Foundations Matter
One of the most encouraging things I see with many puppies is when owners have prepared well before bringing their dog home.
Choosing a good breeder, learning about training and focusing on early foundations can make a huge difference to how confident and relaxed a dog becomes.
Good training often starts long before the puppy arrives home.
