Bringing home a puppy is one of life’s greatest joys — but it’s also a big commitment. Choosing the right puppy isn’t just about picking the cutest face; it’s about finding the right match for your family, lifestyle, and future plans. 💛
A responsible breeder will want the same. They’ll care deeply about where their puppies are going, and they’ll take time to make sure you’re the right fit.
When we chose our Working Cocker Spaniel, Pip, we went through a full application process — and honestly, that was one of the best signs. It showed how much the breeder cared about their puppies’ futures. 🐶✨
Here are a few key things to look for when choosing your puppy (and your breeder):
✅ Meet Mum — and See Where the Puppies Are Raised
Always ask to meet the puppies’ mum, and ideally see where they’re being raised. They should be in a clean, busy household environment — not shut away in a kennel or outbuilding. Puppies learn a lot from their surroundings, so early exposure to normal home life is a great sign.
✅ Expect Questions — From Both Sides
A good breeder will want to know all about you: your experience, lifestyle, work routine, and plans for the puppy. It’s a partnership, not a sale. If they take time to get to know you, that’s a positive sign — they care where their pups go.
✅ Health Testing Matters
Don’t just ask if the puppies have seen a vet. Ask for proof of health testing relevant to the breed. Responsible breeders test for genetic conditions common in their breed to help ensure healthy, happy dogs.
✅ Early Socialisation Is Crucial
Puppies experience a critical socialisation window between roughly 3–16 weeks old. During this time, they’re learning about the world — sounds, people, textures, handling, and more.
The best breeders use that time wisely, gently introducing their puppies to new experiences and keeping future owners updated with photos and videos of their progress. 🧠🌍📸
✅ No Rushing — Ever
You shouldn’t feel pressured to take a puppy before eight weeks old, or to make a quick decision. Reputable breeders will let their puppies grow, learn, and develop before going to their new homes.
✅ Avoid Taking Littermates
It might sound sweet to bring home two puppies together, but raising littermates can create serious behavioural and training challenges later on. A responsible breeder won’t encourage it — their focus is always on the long-term welfare of each pup. 🙅♀️🐾
✅ Expect a Waiting List
The best breeders don’t always have puppies ready straight away. They plan litters carefully and often have homes lined up before the puppies are even born. It’s worth waiting for the right breeder — and the right puppy. ⏳💚
✅ Lifetime Support
A responsible breeder’s job doesn’t end when you take your puppy home. If things don’t work out, or life changes unexpectedly, they’ll always take their dogs back — no questions asked. That’s a true sign of care and responsibility. 🏡❤️
💕 Take Your Time — It’s Worth It
Bringing home a puppy is exciting, but the best start in life begins long before they set paw in your home. Do your research, ask questions, and trust your instincts.
The right breeder — and the right puppy — are absolutely worth waiting for. 🐾
